Regular dental visits are important because they help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. During the dental check-up, your dentist will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas. During the cleaning, your dentist will remove any plaque and tartar buildup and may polish your teeth.

1. Examine your teeth, gums, and mouth.

2. Ask about your general health and any problems you’ve had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit.

3. Ask about, and give you advice on, your diet, smoking and alcohol use, and teeth-cleaning habits.

4. Discuss a date for your next visit

Basic dental care involves brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, seeing your dentist and/or dental hygienist for regular checkups and cleanings, and eating a mouth-healthy diet, which means foods high in whole grains, vegetables and fruits, and dairy products.

Your dentist can advise you how often you need to visit based on your oral and general health and your risk factors for tooth decay and gum disease. For example, an adult with good oral hygiene and no problems at checkups may need to come in once or twice a year.

Using a mouthwash containing fluoride can help you to prevent decay. However, do not use mouthwash immediately after brushing your teeth since it will rinse away the concentrated toothpaste fluoride left on your teeth. Additionally, don’t drink or eat for at least 30 minutes after using mouthwash.

1. Clean your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
2. Floss once a day.
3. Visit your dentist regularly for a checkup and cleaning.
4. Eat a well-balanced diet.
5. Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk of gum disease.
